Turkey In Brief
Turkey is a rapidly developing secular democracy with a population of nearly 70 million and is a candidate for membership of the European Union. It is the only country to straddle Europe and Asia, a fact that is reflected in its complex cultural make up. Asiatic Turkey, or Anatolia, constitutes the bulk of the country. It consists of a vast peninsula framed by four seas, the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean and the Mediterranean, each of which has its own distinctive character. Both in human and geographical terms, Turkey is a country of immense diversity. There are crowded cosmopolitan cities, such as Istanbul and Izmir, high plateau, forested mountains and Mediterranean beaches. The climate and ecology are equally varied, ranging from temperate rain forests on the eastern Black Sea Coast to semi-desert in the Southeast.
Turkey has more Classical ruins than any other country, but also boasts some of the World’s finest Islamic art and architecture. Whether your interests or those of your guests, extend to exploring archaeological sites, trekking, rafting, nightclubbing, or simply lazing on a beach, Turkey is for you. And you are assured of a warm welcome. Turkish hospitality is second to none and grows out of a long tradition. Much the same could be said of Turkish cuisine, to which Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have all contributed. The results are as varied and enticing as the country itself. According to most experts, Turkish cuisine is the third most extensive cuisine in the world after Chinese and French. With so much on offer, there is no doubt that you will find something to suit your tastes and tempt your palate
Language Spoken by some 150-200 million people around the world Turkish is a widely used language. Although Turkish is written in Latin alphabet, the language belongs to the Ural-Altaic languages related to the Finno-Ugric. In major cities and resort areas English, German and French are also widely spoken.
Currency The Turkish Lira is the official currency in Turkey while the exchange rate is set on a daily basis. It is easy to find a bank or an exchange office while traveller’s checks can be cashed at in most banks. Foreign currencies are accepted at hotels, many shops and restaurants. All major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.
Visas Check out Turkey’s visa regulations to have a smooth travel experience. Turkey offers many facilities concerning its visa policy. Visas can be obtained from Turkish Embassies abroad or at the airport. As the rules may often change, it’s wise to check regularly www.mfa.gov.tr to receive updated information.
e-visa Turkey’s electronic visa application system offers to its applicants a comfortable and practical way to obtain visa. E-visa is an endorsement allowing the bearer to enter Turkey. This new type of visa replaces “sticker type of visa” issued at the border crossings. Please note that e-visas are only valid when the travel purpose is tourism or commerce. Must See Destinations
ISTANBUL - Istanbul is literally incomparable. No other city bestrides two continents or has been an imperial capital for more than 1,500 years. It remains Turkey’s cultural and intellectual center, and the richness and diversity of its accumulated heritage will take your breath away.
EPHESUS - This is arguably the most impressive ancient site in western Turkey, and certainly the most celebrated. The city s origins go back to the early Bronze Age, but most of what you will see dates from the Roman and Early Byzantine periods.
CAPPADOCCIA - Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s star attractions, and it is easy to see why. Its lunar rock formations are colored startling shades of pink, white and ochre, and hidden amongst them are literally hundreds of rock cut Byzantine churches, many containing extensive frescoes.
